About Susanna Schmid

In 1956, we moved to Saanenland, where my father opened his own veterinary practice. I spent a wonderful childhood there with my four siblings. I had a very close relationship with my father. I loved spending time in his practice, watching and helping him with his work. I also often accompanied him up to the Alps in the summer when he had to examine the farmers' animals. Those were wonderful moments for me, being out and about with him. His zest for life, his love of nature, people and animals will remain an example for me for the rest of my life. He gave me a feel for the whole world of legends and their stories. He told me a lot of stories. After nine years of elementary school in a comprehensive school and a 10th school year in Spiez, I attended a kindergarten teacher training course. In spring 1974, I successfully completed my training and took up my first job as a kindergarten teacher in Meiringen. In 1977, fate struck: my father died unexpectedly of heart failure when he was only 50 years old. My then boyfriend and now husband Walter helped me a lot to bear this loss during this difficult time.

I enjoyed my job as a kindergarten teacher until 1981. I married Walter Schmid in 1981. Simon was born in 1982, Matthias in 1984 and Christoph in 1986 and I enjoyed being a mother to the full. In 1991, fate struck again. On a beautiful June day, my youngest sister was killed in a plane crash. When all three sons were at school, I occasionally took on a substitute role as a kindergarten teacher, taught craft courses at the adult education center or helped with events at the tourist office.

I have been writing and painting picture books since 1996. This activity is a huge enrichment for me.
